Awe-inducing creatures like mastodons, giant ground sloths, saber-toothed cats and even dire wolves have sadly gone extinct since the last ice age ended about 11,700 years ago. But that doesn’t mean you’re out of luck in seeing prehistoric creatures today. There are still plenty of wildlife species that predate recorded history, and that exist in the same forms they did when they roamed with our loincloth-clad ancestors.
Wherever you see them, these ancient animals — some of which might surprise you — are sure to inspire wonder.
Some of which are:
The gorgeous vicuña is the ancient ancestor of a well-known modern animal.
The tuatara looks somewhat ordinary but is anything but.
The cassowary is an amazing creature. But be careful: It can be dangerous.
Polar bears are as adorable as they are extremely old.
The decidedly strange horseshoe crab is a true survivor.
