First of all, this generation deals with Shift Work every day. And the lifestyle of the person is very difficult. But still, the person can get a lot of time after there shift instead of wasting all long day starting from 9 to 6. And the sleep routine differs every time. It’s a disappointing one.
But still what is shift work sleep disorder.

Shift Work Sleep Disorder

Shift work sleep disorder (SWSD) occurs in individuals who work non-traditional hours. It’s like a split shift, graveyard shifts, early morning shifts, or rotating shifts. It’s excessive sleepiness, lack of refreshing sleep, and drowsiness. These symptoms can affect both work and leisure time.

The nontraditional work schedule can disrupt a person’s circadian rhythm, or “biological clock.” It regulates wakefulness and sleepiness at relatively set times throughout the 24-hour day. The circadian rhythm will have frustrating symptoms when it’s throw off since it affects:

  1. Sleepiness
  2. Alertness
  3. Body temperature
  4. Hormone levels
  5. Hunger

The Cleveland Clinic estimates that between 10 to 40 per cent of shift workers experience SWSD. It affects who have regular shifting schedules.

However, not everyone who works a nontraditional shift experiences SWSD. Many people who work these shifts have circadian rhythms that make them natural “night owls,” and they’re able to avoid the disorder.

Symptoms

  1. Excessive sleepiness, both on and off the job
  2. Difficulty concentrating
  3. Lack of energy
  4. Insomnia that prevents you from getting adequate sleep
  5. Sleep that feels incomplete or not refreshing
  6. Depression or moodiness
  7. Trouble with relationships

How is it diagnosed?

In the sleep study, you’ll sleep in a clinic overnight with monitors. It is place on your finger, chest, or face. These monitors will evaluate things like:

  • Sleep qualitynumber of sleep disturbances
  • Heart rate
  • Breathing

How is shift work sleep disorder treated?

While lifestyle changes are the most important component of healthy sleep, some may turn to sleep aids. As a result, Melatonin is  safe, and some workers find it greatly improves the quality of their sleep.

Modafinil (Provigil) is approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration as a wake-promoting drug with a low abuse potential. It’s improve sleep and lessen morning-after sleepiness. In clinical trials, modafinil was also shown to reduce long-term memory impairment and improve memory acquisition.

Hence, to improve sleep quality as much as possible, try to block out disruptions. Try not to look at your phone or bright screens for an hour before bed. Use white noise machines, calming music, or ear plugs to drown out the background noise of the day.
